In 2018 this support contributed to the work of the Whitlam Institute that included: Empowering young people to constructively participate as citizens through: delivery of civics education programs to over 1300 students from 50 school with a focus on Western Sydney convening What Matters writing competition in NSW, ACT and Tasmania empowering over 4000 students to write about what matters to them. Creating a space for intellectual and cultural engagement for the people of Western Sydney through: permanent and touring exhibition program in the historic Female Orphan School galleries - free entry offering seminar and other public programs including final speech and panel discussion with outgoing Race Discrimination Commissioner; symposium on Indigenous Self-determination; symposium on community sentiment and Chinese Australian Experiences. Undertaking a range of activities and research under the two policy themes of the Future of Australian Democracy and Australia in the World including; Whitlam Oration delivered by eminent barrister Bret Walker SC on The Information Democracy Needs; hosting panel discussion following screening of Border Politics, featuring human rights barrister Julian Burnside and refugee advocate Hayat Akbari; policy symposium presenting research findings of EG Whitlam Research Fellow Professor Heidi Norman on land rights in south east Australia; presentation of research findings of EG Whitlam Research Fellow Dr Adam Hughes Henry reflecting on the Whitlam Legacy on Foreign Affairs, Human Rights and International Law. Enhancing access to the Whitlam Prime Ministerial Collection through loans, digitisation of new material and online access. Continued utilisation of the Collection through the exhibitions program and scholarly research.
