The Illawarra Grammar School

The Illawarra Grammar School is a large-scale charity established in 1958. Their main activity is registered as early childhood education primarily serving early childhood - aged under 6.

The Illawarra Grammar School (TIGS) was founded in 1959 through the concerted efforts, vision and energy of the late Bishop Gordon Begbie and a dedicated band of 'founding parents' who firmly believed in the need for a regional Anglican School to be based in the Illawarra. The Illawarra Grammar School Ordinance 1958 established the School on 15 December 1958 and it opened on 3 February 1959 with 28 boys. The Illawarra Grammar School has seen many changes since 28 students first started classes in the Sunday School Hall of St. Marks Anglican Church back in February 1959. We now have over 900 students from Pre-Prep to Year 12, a pathway through the International Baccalaureate programme culminating in the Diploma Programme or NSW Higher School Certificate and a magnificent campus with world-class facilities. TIGS remains the school of choice for Illawarra parents who want their children to have an excellent education that will develop their potential in a Christian and caring environment. TIGS School Council has developed a Strategic Vision to take us through to 2022. It is a wonderful example of collaboration involving staff, students, parents and friends. An extensive survey process and stakeholder focus groups helped inform the outcome. The Strategic Plan provides the framework for the School community that will inform and guide its activities to ensure the continued achievement of the Schools Mission and Core Values. The Strategic Plan and Property Masterplan - to be successful, learning in the 21st Century requires a different approach to learning to that when the School was established in 1959. We want to bring our campus into alignment with our approach to teaching and learning to ensure the best outcomes for our students and the best support for our teachers. The School Council has made the decision to embark on a programme of building and campus refurbishment that will take the School into the 21st Century. It will involve the systematic modernisation of the campus over the next 21 years to reflect and support the needs of 21st Century teaching and learning. This programme, the TIGS Building Master Plan, is called TIGS21. Development of the plan has occurred with consultation across the TIGS community and with the support of PMDL, a leading group in architects experienced in developing Master Plans with Schools. We seek to educate each student to realise their full potential in all of their gifts and abilities and to have effective governance and leadership to ensure that best practice policies are in place, enabling the School to serve its community in a sustainable and responsible way.
